Solution

You should choose to go first.

Explanation

Put your first coin right in the centre of the table.

Wherever your opponent then puts her coin, put your next coin diagonally opposite. (Use the same size coin as your opponent has just used).

This means that you'll always have somewhere to put your next coin.

Nothing much to say about this. A neat and simple solution, not necessarily obvious!
